The Gyumri's Shirak Group is made up of a few dozen 20 highly skilled artisans who produce thousands of crocheted handicrafts every year. Most of the crocheters come from professional backgrounds, but with the difficult economic situation after the 1988 earthquake, many have turned to traditional skills learned as young girls to provide supplemental income for families.
